For many years the potential of utilizing standard ISO freight containers for storage and shipping of bulk solids has been recognized, and to date only exploited generally with free flowing granular materials. The handling of bulk powders (flour, chemicals, fly ash, cement, etc) in this way has been limited by the difficulty of retrieving the powders, which can compact and consolidate.
Tipping of the container has always been seen as necessary and acceptable but flow can only be guaranteed if the powder is fluidised by mechanical means, or more preferably by aeration. Modified containers are expensive and limited in general freight usage as they cannot be off hired. The containers are usually dedicated to a specific supply and returned to source empty. |
